Pebbles, Letters and Shapes

Donato and Jorge were provoked with pebbles. Together with the teacher they touched and compared the different shapes and sounds they made when rubbed against each other.

Besides touching and manipulating the pebbles, the teacher wanted them to know how rich, creative and fun pebbles are to create different shapes and  even letters.

Through this activity both Donato and Jorge practiced letter recognition skills, letter tracing, vocabulary  as well as creativeness itself.

The teacher encouraged Donato and Jorge by modeling with pebbles their first letters.

A pebbled letter D and J, directed their interest to create other letters with pebbles.

After exploring with  different letters on the carpet, the teacher creates a dog motivating  them to create different things with pebbles.

Donato creates…
A dog

A spider

 A tall building

Finding similarities & Peebles

Two weeks  after Donato  and Jorge were exposed to manipulate pebbles in a different way, the teacher places them in the table and André begins to manipulate them.

Spontaneously he begins to create things, first a bat and then a snake. From the snake André begins to build a family of snakes : baby, mother, father and nanny.

One snake

After a period of  quietness and concentration Andre begins to make sounds with  different pebbles as he  says  " Suena como madera” , “Ladrillo”, “Suena duro.” He intentionally begins to test and try out different sounds. At last he founds that two pebbles with a similar shape made a similar sound.

André also  groups pebbles that had some similarity although with different shape.
